About Liz Swartzel

Liz is pursuing her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at Northern Kentucky University.  With years of experience as a designer in the fashion industry, she has lived and worked in many major U.S. and international cities.  Her creative career broadened her worldview and shaped her ability to connect with a wide range of personalities and perspectives.  In these environments, she also learned the power of exposure while navigating her own challenges with anxiety and OCD.  Plus, she learned firsthand the value of using the body and movement to positively impact her mental wellness. Ultimately, this inspired a greater purpose to help others strive for wellness and meaningful change.

One of Liz’s primary goals as a counselor is to help her clients feel “gotten”.  She practices this through empathy, compassion, and unconditional support, while drawing on her creativity to bring flexible, out-of-the-box thinking to the therapeutic process.  Her approach incorporates cognitive reframing and use of metaphors.  While favoring an eclectic theoretical approach, she especially aligns with CBT, client-centered therapy, and existentialism.  Liz recognizes how past experiences can impact the present and believes that arriving at a place of acceptance and peace is a process.  The feeling of freedom upon arrival can illuminate purpose within the journey.

Outside of counseling, Liz enjoys artistic endeavors such as jewelry making, painting, and visiting museums. For years, she has stayed active through endurance training, including running, biking, and swimming.  She is an animal lover and revels in spending time with her Weimaraner puppy, Dean.  Her passion for nutrition fuels her love of cooking for friends and family and gathering people together.  Spirituality has been an important lifelong and personal quest.

Liz hopes to specialize in supporting clients with anxiety, phobias, and OCD while also focusing on helping clients build self-esteem, confidence, and resilience.  She subscribes to a holistic approach to mental health, including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellness.  Liz believes people are a continual work in progress and growth is a lifelong journey.  In climbing a mountain, perspective is about appreciating the difficulty of the climb to enjoy the beautiful view.  Liz’s goal is to comfort and empower her clients to discover their inner strength, embrace their journey, and reach their personal summit.
