Treatment for Sexually Abusive Behaviors
restoring community safety
Treatment for Sexually Abusive Behaviors (TSAB) is a specific therapeutic approach targeting behaviors classified as, or associated with, sexual abuse per state law. Total Wellness 365 is an approved treatment provider with the State of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Most often TSAB is conducted in a group format and uses multiple styles of interventions, including evidence based curricula (example curriculum). You can trust that the treatment providers have extensive training and experience in facilitating this type of treatment; both in a residential setting and community treatment agencies.
who is it for?
Many individuals who have engaged in sexually abusive behaviors are required to participate in treatment by court order, supervision condition or other mandate. TSAB is available for adult males who have such a mandate; self referrals for group are redirected for individual therapy options. While some individuals may struggle with out of control or compulsive/addictive sexual behaviors, this behavior may not be classified as illegal or sexually abusive. Find more information here.
Individuals can expect to be treated with dignity and respect, fostering autonomy, and to be supported in reaching treatment goals. Therapist are expected to have non-judgmental interactions, maintaining confidentiality with ethical and legal limitations, and to uphold community safety, in- and out- side of group.
What is required to participate?
Prior to beginning TSAB each individual must have a completed assessment. Once the assessment has been completed, the individualized treatment goals are established and treatment may begin. Each participant will be encouraged to actively develop a deeper understanding of their own choices and develop a plan for success to reduce the risk of reoffense. The success plan will feature coping strategies related to new healthy thinking patterns, emotional regulation and skills for developing or maintaining healthy relationships.

Types of Treatment Groups
COmprehensive
The focus of the group is to identify the triggers leading to the abusive behavior(s), the influence of poor emotional control, the risky thinking that helped the risk behavior(s) continue. Each group cohort will follow the same structure. Below are the objectives that will be met during participation in group: Participant will comprehend patterns of sexually abusive behaviors and identify personal high risk situations; Participant will verbalize understanding of thinking errors and their relationship to abusive behaviors; Participant will incorporate and build healthy support systems that will augment his supervision and community transition; Participant will develop an individualized success plan to decrease the likelihood of repeating abusive patterns and increase a prosocial lifestyle.
AFTERCARE
In order to maintain the skills learned in comprehensive treatment, it’s important to continually practice and review the skills learned. In either a group or individual therapy format, the focus is on the maintenance and practice of skills learned by applying the skills to everyday and new risk situations. Verification of completion of comprehensive treatment is required prior to participation in aftercare.
BRIEF INTERVENTION
Lapse behaviors related to sexually abusive patterns or violations of conditions of supervision (e.g. associated with sexually abusive behaviors) are targeted through a review of skills and knowledge learned in prior treatment or an brief introduction to basic skills to prevent lapse/relapse behaviors. Usually offered in a group setting this intervention does not require prior completion of comprehensive TSAB to participate. Contact the office for more information.
Family Reunification
Individuals involved in sexually abusive or compulsive behaviors may be required by an attorney, court or supervision authority, to have an assessment prior to returning to live in a home when minors are present. Specialized assessments have been developed specifically targeting the identification of the risk to children to meet these requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to identify targets of treatment, level of risk to re-offend, and/or outline expectations for conditions of supervision.
Is there treatment for women who sexually abuse?
Females who engage in sexually abusive behaviors are not as widely researched and the numbers tell us why; roughly 5% of those convicted of sexual abuse are female. The characteristics of individuals who sexually abuse are widely different between male and female. Thus, so must the treatment approaches.
Although Total Wellness 365 does not currently offer TSAB groups specific for females, individual treatment is available. Contact us for a free consultation.
