Pre-sentence evaluations provide courts with clinical information that informs sentencing decisions in cases involving sexual offenses. These evaluations typically include comprehensive clinical interviews, review of incident reports and case discovery, administration of validated risk assessment instruments, and psychosexual history when appropriate. The report addresses risk level, amenability to treatment, and recommendations relevant to sentencing, supervision conditions, and treatment planning.

Evaluations are conducted at the request of defense counsel, prosecutors, or the court, and are prepared to withstand scrutiny in legal proceedings.

Individuals involved in sexually abusive or compulsive behaviors may be required by an attorney, court or supervision authority, to have an assessment prior to returning to live in a home where minors are present. The purpose of specialized assessments is to identify targets of treatment, level of risk to re-offend, and/or outline expectations for conditions of supervision.

Individuals petitioning the court for removal from the sex offender registry, or for reclassification to a lower tier, often require a current clinical risk assessment as part of their petition. These evaluations assess present-day risk of reoffense using validated, empirically supported instruments, along with a review of treatment history, compliance record, and relevant life changes since the original conviction.

The resulting report is written for submission to the court and addresses current risk level and any factors relevant to the petitioner’s request. Evaluations can be requested by the petitioner’s attorney or ordered by the court.
